Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I sign up and log in?

It's passwordless. Enter your email and we'll send you a secure magic link to sign in — or use the Sign in with Google button. There's no password to remember.

How much does membership cost?

Membership prices will be announced soon. During our alpha, members are helping us shape the service.

Where do you ship?

We're currently in a limited alpha. Once we're out of alpha, we plan to ship anywhere in the continental US.

Can I change, cancel, or pause my plan?

Yes — you can change or cancel your plan at any time. You can also pause your membership from your account page and resume whenever you're ready.

Choosing Books & Holds

How many books can I have at once?

It depends on your plan: 1 book at a time on the Basic plan, or up to 3 on the Family plan. This is your number of active books. A slot frees up as soon as we receive a book back, so returning sooner lets you request your next title sooner.

What if the book I want is already checked out?

Place a hold and you'll join the waitlist for that title. When it's your turn, we add it to your next shipment automatically — no need to check back.

How does the waitlist work?

Holds are filled in turn: priority goes to members who have an open book slot, and then by the order in which holds were placed.

I added books but didn't ship them — what happens?

Adding books to a shipment doesn't send it — you still need to select Ship. Until you do, those books are held for you for up to 7 days; if you don't ship, they return to the shelf so other members can enjoy them.

Shipping & Returns

What does “one shipment per calendar month” mean?

You can send one envelope of books per calendar month (the month is based on our Seattle time zone). Each envelope can hold up to your plan’s book limit. Once you’ve sent your envelope for the month, your next one opens on the 1st of the following month. You can keep adding books to your next envelope in the meantime — if you’ve already shipped this month, it will go out automatically when the new month begins.

How do returns work, and who pays for return shipping?

Every envelope comes with a prepaid return label, so returns are free. When you’re done with a book, drop it in the mail — you can return your books one at a time, and each one that comes back frees a slot for your next request.

What happens if I don’t return all my books?

You don’t have to return everything at once. Any book you keep continues to use one of your slots, so you’ll have fewer openings for new titles until it comes back. Return whichever books you’ve finished with, whenever you’re ready, using the prepaid label — each returned book frees a slot for your next shipment.

What happens if I take more than 30 days to return a book?

Each loan lasts 30 days, and we’ll email you reminders before and just after the due date. There are no late fees — but while a book is past due, new shipments are paused until it’s back, so returning on time keeps your books flowing. Just drop the overdue book in the mail with its prepaid label.

What condition should I return books in?

Please return books in good condition. If a book arrived damaged in shipping, just let us know so we can sort it out.

Policies & Problems

What if a book is lost or damaged?

If a book isn’t returned within 120 days, is lost, or comes back severely damaged, we charge a flat replacement fee of $15.

How do I update my mailing address?

You can update your shipping address anytime from your account details.
